Mac G5 Keeps Going to Sleep Because of Dust

February 21st, 2008

My Macintosh G5 kept going to sleep and I didn’t know why.  I figured it must need some software housekeeping, so I checked the disk for errors and set the disk utility to repair any it found.  Then I made sure the hard drives had plenty of space.  I cleared room in my iTunes library.  I uninstalled some programs I wasn’t using.  In the end, I learned the problem was very physical.  Taking out the fan, I saw the dust that had accumulated.  This was despite running a hepa filter in the room.  Vacuuming out the dust fixed the problem, which was that the computer was overheating.
